SJR48,1,22 Whereas, one in five Americans lives with a mental illness; and
SJR48,1,43 Whereas, May has been observed as National Mental Health Awareness Month
4since 1949; and
SJR48,1,75 Whereas, Mental Health Awareness Month is a time to raise awareness about
6mental illnesses, such as major depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder, and
7draw attention to suicide, which may be precipitated by mental illness; and
SJR48,1,108 Whereas, we must empower first responders, doctors, and families to help those
9with the most severe mental illnesses to ensure that people with mental illness have
10access to evidence-based treatment and services; and
SJR48,1,1211 Whereas, the stigma associated with mental illness prevents many individuals
12from seeking help for themselves or loved ones; and
SJR48,1,1313 Whereas, treatments for mental illnesses are highly effective; and

1Whereas, reducing the stigma associated with mental illness through
2compassion, education, and advocacy can draw attention to the proven methods that
3better the lives of those living with a mental illness; now, therefore, be it

5legislature join our colleagues in Congress by proclaiming May as Mental Health
6Awareness Month.
