AJR61,1,72 Whereas, Governor Tommy George Thompson, a man dedicated to the service
3of his state and country, has worked throughout his life to advance the public good,
4having been employed as an attorney and having served in both the Wisconsin Army
5National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserves, as a Wisconsin state representative,
6as governor of Wisconsin, and as United States Secretary of Health and Human
7Services; and
AJR61,1,108 Whereas, Governor Thompson served with honor and distinction and was
9elected to four terms as the governor of Wisconsin, a record unsurpassed in the
10history of Wisconsin governors; and
AJR61,1,1211 Whereas, in 1987, when Tommy Thompson was inaugurated governor, he
12inherited a complex state with diverse interests and economic needs; and
AJR61,2,213 Whereas, Governor Thompson worked in a bipartisan manner to enact his bold,
14groundbreaking agenda of welfare reform, school choice, and health care reform,

1which led to an unprecedented reduction in welfare in Wisconsin and a rebuilding
2of Wisconsin's economy; and
AJR61,2,53 Whereas, Governor Thompson pioneered the first welfare-to-work
4law—Wisconsin Works, or W2—which provided state-supported aid to working
5families, and ultimately became a national model for welfare reform; and
AJR61,2,86 Whereas, Thompson's commitment to an active social policy agenda helped
7expand the number of low-income, working Wisconsinites who were able to receive
8health care coverage; and
AJR61,2,119 Whereas, Thompson's dedication to education brought the nation's first school
10choice program to Wisconsin, broadening education options for all Wisconsin
11students; and
AJR61,2,1312 Whereas, Thompson's tireless years of service in Wisconsin government
13instilled the tradition of civic involvement for all Wisconsinites; and
AJR61,2,1614 Whereas, Thompson's lifelong dedication to the state of Wisconsin and his
15never-ending optimism have ensured that Wisconsin has been and always will be
16moving forward; now, therefore, be it
AJR61,2,19 17Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin
18Legislature hereby recognizes November 19, 2017, and subsequent yearly
19anniversaries as “Tommy G. Thompson Day.”
