SJR51,1,32 Whereas, July 1 to 3, 2013, marks the 150th anniversary of the Battle of
3Gettysburg; and
SJR51,1,64 Whereas, the Battle of Gettysburg was fought from July 1 to July 3, 1863,
5outside the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, between Union and Confederate
6soldiers during America's Civil War; and
SJR51,1,97 Whereas, Wisconsin soldiers played an integral role in the Battle of Gettysburg,
8which was the turning point of the Civil War, stopping Confederate soldiers from
9gaining northern territory; and
SJR51,1,1110 Whereas, this pivotal battle put Union soldiers ahead and secured our nation's
11history as we know it today; and
SJR51,1,1312 Whereas, Wisconsin troops were the first Union soldiers to face Confederate
13troops near Gettysburg on the first day of battle; and
SJR51,1,1514 Whereas, the brave men of the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry were at the very front
15lines of battle and immediately lost a third of their men; and

1Whereas, the 2nd, 6th, and 7th Wisconsin Infantry regiments, known as the
2Iron Brigade, were our brave soldiers who were the first to face Confederate troops
3near Gettysburg on the morning of July 1, 1863; and
SJR51,2,54 Whereas, the Iron Brigade lost a total of 578 men over the course of the battle;
5and
SJR51,2,76 Whereas, the 26th Wisconsin Infantry also fought throughout the first day and
7lost more than 210 of its men; and
SJR51,2,98 Whereas, the 3rd and 5th Wisconsin Infantry regiments also bravely fought but
9arrived late in the battle; now, therefore, be it
SJR51,2,11 10Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the Wisconsin
11legislature honors the Wisconsinites who served in the Battle of Gettysburg.
