2Bowl Team for winning the 12th Annual Lake Sturgeon Bowl Regional
3Competition.
SJR16,1,64 Whereas, the Spring Valley High School National Ocean Sciences Bowl Team
5was named champion of the 12th Annual Lake Sturgeon Bowl Regional Competition
6on February 9, 2013, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and
SJR16,1,97 Whereas, the National Ocean Sciences Bowl is a nationwide academic
8competition designed to challenge and test students in their knowledge of ocean and
9freshwater-related topics; and
SJR16,1,1110 Whereas, this year's theme is "The Great Lakes: A Window into Freshwater
11Science"; and
SJR16,1,1412 Whereas, the Spring Valley team, coached by Michele Huppert, consists of team
13captain, senior Sarah Sortedahl, and team members, seniors Ashley Ehman and Rex
14Gould and juniors Claire Arneson and Tyler O'Keefe; and

1Whereas, Coach Michele Huppert has been a successful mentor to the team
2members and has taken great strides to promote the importance of educational
3opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the Spring
4Valley School District; and
SJR16,2,85 Whereas, the team members have proven themselves as academically gifted
6and driven students, planning to pursue post-secondary education in software
7engineering, materials science, natural resources management, and medical fields;
8and
SJR16,2,109 Whereas, the team has been studying and preparing for the competition since
10October; and
SJR16,2,1311 Whereas, the team members have become experts in oceanography and
12freshwater resources in the disciplines of marine biology, chemistry, geology,
13technology, physics, social science, and marine policy; and
SJR16,2,1514 Whereas, Spring Valley High School has been committed to the National Ocean
15Sciences Bowl by fielding a team in the competition for the past nine years; and
SJR16,2,1916 Whereas, as a symbol of Wisconsin's forestry heritage and to resemble
17lumberjacks, the team donned flannel shirts as the official team uniform, which has
18been a tradition passed down from previous Spring Valley High School National
19Ocean Sciences Bowl teams; and
SJR16,2,2120 Whereas, this year's team finished ahead of their longtime rival, Marshfield
21High School, to whom they placed second in the previous six years; and
SJR16,2,2422 Whereas, the team notably went undefeated throughout the entire Lake
23Sturgeon Bowl and averaged a score twice that of their opponents for each match;

1Whereas, due to the team's exceptional accomplishment of placing first in the
2Lake Sturgeon Bowl, the team will advance to the National Ocean Sciences Bowl
3Finals Competition, where they will compete against twenty-five other states and
4the District of Columbia; and
SJR16,3,85 Whereas, the team will proudly represent Spring Valley High School, the
6Spring Valley School District, the greater community, and the state of Wisconsin at
7the national competition in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from April 18 to April 21; now,
8therefore, be it
SJR16,3,14 9Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
10Wisconsin legislature do hereby commend the Spring Valley High School National
11Ocean Sciences Bowl Team on finishing in first place at the 12th Annual Lake
12Sturgeon Bowl Regional Competition and wish the team success at the upcoming
132013 National Ocean Sciences Bowl Finals Competition and in their future
14endeavors.
