AJR112,1,42 Whereas, Mary Lou (Rogers) Munts served six terms in the Wisconsin State
3Assembly from 1973 to 1984 and was a leader in advancing the role of female
4lawmakers and women in the state of Wisconsin; and
AJR112,1,105 Whereas, Mary Lou Rogers was born on August 21, 1924, in Chicago, Illinois;
6attended Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania; took a leave of absence to work on
7the congressional campaign of Vernon O'Rourke; completed her undergraduate
8studies and earned a master's degree in economics at the University of Chicago in
91947; and earned a law degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1976;
10and
AJR112,1,1211 Whereas, Mary Lou Rogers married Raymond Munts in 1947 and together they
12had four children; and
AJR112,1,1413 Whereas, she took part as an activist in critical times throughout United States
14history, such as the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War protests; and

1Whereas, Mary Lou Munts ran for the State Assembly to be a citizens' lobbyist
2and public interest legislator and became just that; and
AJR112,2,73 Whereas, during her tenure in the State Assembly she authored and passed the
4Protective Services Act to defend the rights of people with disabilities; the Mental
5Health Act to extend rights, services, and protections to people who struggled to get
6care; and legislation to reform the state's marital property law by giving men and
7women the same claims to property in a marriage; and
AJR112,2,108 Whereas, Mary Lou Munts chaired the Assembly Committee on Environmental
9Quality and wrote groundbreaking legislation on the siting of power plants, water
10quality, and recycling; and
AJR112,2,1311 Whereas, Mary Lou Munts was the first woman to co-chair the legislature's
12powerful Joint Committee on Finance and the first woman to oversee the Public
13Service Commission; and
AJR112,2,1614 Whereas, Mary Lou Munts was widely known for her bipartisan work, her
15ability to "find consensus when others wouldn't even make a stab at it," and her
16infallible energy; and
AJR112,2,1817 Whereas, Mary Lou Munts passed away December 22, 2013, at the age of 89;
18now, therefore, be it
AJR112,2,22 19Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
20Wisconsin legislature commend the public service that Mary Lou Munts contributed
21to her community, express their sorrow at her death, and extend their condolences
22to her family and friends.
