AJR38,1,42 Whereas, stroke is a leading cause of serious long-term disability and the
3third-leading cause of death in the United States, killing over 136,000 people
4nationwide and over 2,400 residents of Wisconsin each year; and
AJR38,1,95 Whereas, warning signs of stroke include sudden numbness or weakness of the
6face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body; sudden confusion and trouble
7speaking or understanding; sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; sudden
8trouble walking, dizziness, or loss of balance or coordination; and sudden severe
9headache with no known cause; and
AJR38,1,1110 Whereas, Americans are more aware of the risk factors and warning signs for
11stroke than in the past, but two in five adults still cannot identify any symptoms; and
AJR38,2,412 Whereas, two initiatives for American Stroke Awareness Month 2011 are "Take
132 to Save 2," which encourages people to take two minutes to save two lives by
14sending two health messages to two people who may smoke, be overweight, have high
15blood pressure, diabetes, or a family history of heart disease or stroke, and who are

1at increased risk of stroke, and "Power To End Stroke," which aims to reduce stroke
2in African Americans, who are at particularly high risk of the disease, by
3empowering them to reduce their risk, recognize the warning signs, and respond
4quickly; and
AJR38,2,75 Whereas, new and effective treatments have been developed to treat and
6minimize the severity and damaging effects of strokes, but much more research is
7needed; now, therefore, be it
AJR38,2,13 8Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin
9legislature does hereby proclaim May 2011 to be American Stroke Awareness Month
10in Wisconsin and urges all the citizens of our state to familiarize themselves with the
11risk factors associated with stroke, recognize the warning signs and symptoms, and
12on first signs of a stroke dial 9-1-1 immediately so that we might begin to reduce the
13devastating effects of stroke on our population.
