SJR70,1,1 1Relating to: recognizing Aquaculture Day.
SJR70,1,42 Whereas, aquaculture, also known as fish farming, is an important agricultural
3industry in Wisconsin, dating back to 1856, having a sound environmental history
4using sustainable best management practices; and
SJR70,1,75 Whereas, Wisconsin has 2,314 registered fish farms, 1,984 private farms with
6ponds, 125 business farms, 213 public fee fishing farms, 6 wholesale fish processing
7farms, and 95 farms processing fish for human consumption; and
SJR70,1,98 Whereas, aquaculture has sales of $14.1 million in fish and minnows, which is
9ranked first in the Midwest; and
SJR70,1,1110 Whereas, aquaculture contributes $21 million to Wisconsin's economy, and
11commercial farm operations provide 441 jobs; and
SJR70,1,1312 Whereas, 90 percent of 1.4 million anglers in Wisconsin use live bait and fish
13farms provide locally grown live bait and fish for stocking; and

1Whereas, Wisconsin fish farms provide safe, locally grown food which is high
2in valuable nutrients such as Omega-3, which is recommended by the American
3Heart Association; now, therefore, be it
SJR70,2,8 4Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That in recognition of
5the aquaculture industry in Wisconsin, the members of the Wisconsin legislature do
6hereby proclaim July 17, 2010, and every third Saturday of July thereafter, to be
7Aquaculture Day in Wisconsin and urge all citizens to recognize the importance of
8this industry.
