SJR34,1,1 1Relating to: the life and public service of Dr. Akbar Ally.
SJR34,1,32 Whereas, Dr. Akbar Ally has been a devoted advocate for the proliferation of
3diversity and a leader in the cause for social justice in the area of education; and
SJR34,1,74 Whereas, Dr. Ally received his Ph.D. in Urban Social Studies in 1981 from the
5University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, going on to receive professional development
6certificates from both the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Harvard
7University; and
SJR34,1,11 8Whereas, Dr. Ally has shown true devotion to providing equal educational
9opportunities for all through his establishment of a retention program for students
10from low socioeconomic backgrounds at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee;
11and
SJR34,2,2 12Whereas, while the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs of the University of
13Wisconsin-Madison Graduate School, he improved recruitment and retention
14strategies, established faculty and student exchange programs with 27 minority

1colleges and universities, and provided opportunities for high school and
2undergraduate students in the sciences to further their education; and
SJR34,2,7 3Whereas, as the Special Assistant to the Provost and Vice Chancellor at the
4University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. Ally was able to further improve recruitment
5and retention strategies of both students and faculty, increasing the number of
6minority faculty and staff, including women, while also improving the graduation
7rates of students from low-income families; and
SJR34,2,11 8Whereas, through his dedication to diversity, he has improved not only the
9image of the University of Wisconsin-Madison but also the overall educational
10experience of its students, exposing them to more ideas and more walks of life, and
11furthering their understanding of the world; and
SJR34,2,17 12Whereas, Dr. Ally, as the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at
13UW-Madison has furthered the university's diversity efforts by establishing the
14PreCollege Enhancement Opportunity Program (PEOPLE) to increase diversity of
15the student body through collaboration with business communities and school
16districts to increase high school graduation and college preparation for minorities;
17and
SJR34,2,22 18Dr. Akbar Ally's support for diversity on our campuses and in our communities
19has continued in his retirement through his volunteering and lecturing, and he
20should be forever recognized for his efforts and accomplishments in pursuit of
21creating a more equal and diverse environment in both education and beyond; now,
22therefore, be it
SJR34,2,24 23Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the legislature
24commends the life and public service of Dr. Akbar Ally.
