2009 - 2010 LEGISLATURE
January 25, 2010 - Introduced by Law Revision Committee. Referred to Committee
on Transportation, Tourism, Forestry, and Natural Resources.
SB485,1,3 1An Act to repeal 348.185 and 348.21 (1) of the statutes; relating to: displaying
2the empty weight on the side of certain motor vehicles (suggested as remedial
3legislation by the Department of Transportation).
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Current law prohibits any person from operating a motor truck, truck tractor,
motor bus, trailer, or semitrailer unless the vehicle's empty weight is displayed on
the side of the vehicle. This bill eliminates the requirement that a vehicle's empty
weight be displayed.
For further information, see the Notes provided by the Law Revision
Committee of the Joint Legislative Council.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
Law Revision Committee prefatory note: This bill is a remedial legislation
proposal, requested by the Department of Transportation and introduced by the Law
Revision Committee under s. 13.83 (1) (c) 4. and 5., stats. After careful consideration of
the various provisions of the bill, the Law Revision Committee has determined that this
bill makes minor substantive changes in the statutes, and that these changes are
desirable as a matter of public policy.
SB485, s. 1 4Section 1. 348.185 of the statutes is repealed.

Note: This Section repeals section 348.185. This statute prohibits any person
from operating a motor truck, truck tractor, motor bus, trailer, or semitrailer unless the
vehicle's empty weight is displayed on the side of the vehicle. According to the
department of transportation, federal regulations require only the United States DOT
number and the carrier name to be printed on the side of commercial motor vehicles, and
this change would bring Wisconsin law into conformity with pertinent federal
regulations.
SB485, s. 2 1Section 2. 348.21 (1) of the statutes is repealed.
