Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Under current law, certain highway routes and bridges have been designated
and marked to memorialize, commemorate, or recognize certain individuals, groups,
or events. This bill directs the Department of Transportation to designate and, upon
receipt of sufficient contributions from interested parties, mark the entire route of
USH 63 as the "Gaylord Nelson Highway" in recognition and appreciation of Gaylord
Nelson, who served with distinction as both the governor and a U.S. senator and
whose legacy includes numerous environmental achievements, including the
founding of Earth Day, the creation of the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program,
and the preservation of the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior. No state funds, other
than from contributions from interested parties, may be used for the erection or
maintenance of any markers on USH 63 to identify the highway as the "Gaylord
Nelson Highway."
For further information see the state and local fiscal estimate, which will be
printed as an appendix to this bill.
