AJR75,1,32 Whereas, Dane County Coroner John Stanley passed away suddenly at his
3DeForest home on Sunday, September 13, 2009, at the age of 63; and
AJR75,1,74 Whereas, John Stanley earned the rank of sergeant-combat engineer in the
5United States Marine Corps and served three tours of duty in Vietnam, an
6experience he called life-changing and responsible for making him the man he
7became; and
AJR75,1,128 Whereas, John Stanley had a distinguished career as a public servant in Dane
9County including serving as sergeant and juvenile officer with the McFarland Police
10Department, detective with the Dane County Sheriff's Office, security supervisor
11and director of emergency medical services training at St. Mary's Hospital, and
12firefighter and emergency medical technician for the town of Madison; and
AJR75,1,1513 Whereas, John Stanley began his career in the Dane County Coroner's office in
141991 when he was hired as deputy coroner, and he served as coroner from 2001 to
152009; and

1Whereas, John Stanley's knowledge, skill, and experience were often requested
2by area communities and state organizations, including Rock County which needed
3assistance in setting up its coroner's office, the Wisconsin Coroners and Medical
4Examiners Association for which he served as chairman of the legislative committee,
5and the Pathology Department at UW-Madison; and
AJR75,2,96 Whereas, John Stanley was highly regarded as a compassionate and caring
7man who took his position as coroner and public servant very seriously, making
8himself available at all times of the day, every day of the week, and offering support
9and comfort to victims and to families after the loss of a loved one; and
AJR75,2,1310 Whereas, while John Stanley managed the county coroner's office in one of our
11state's largest cities, he was a farmer at heart who loved and cherished the natural
12beauty of Wisconsin where he hunted, fished, hiked and spent hours in the peace and
13quiet of the woods; and
AJR75,2,1514 Whereas, John Stanley was more than a boss—he was a friend—to his staff in
15the corner's office and everyone who worked closely with him; and
AJR75,2,2016 Whereas, John Stanley recognized the importance of family, treasuring the
17time he spent with his wife, Theone, and the years they spent together raising their
18children, Nickie, Theone, and John, and he looked forward to visits from his
19grandchildren, Michael, Katie, Emily, and Mason, and great-grandson, Gavin; now,
20therefore, be it
AJR75,2,24 21Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature of
22the state of Wisconsin recognizes the dedication, commitment, and public service
23made by John Stanley to the citizens of Dane County and offers its sincere
24sympathies to John Stanley's family.
