Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Under current law, the warden or superintendent of each state prison is
responsible for the care and custody of all inmates, for the prison and its property,
and for enforcing the rules of the Department of Corrections. Current law does not
contain any specific qualifications required for a warden or a superintendent.
Under this bill, a person who wishes to serve as a prison warden or
superintendent must have at least three years of experience as a correctional officer.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
SB571, s. 1 3Section 1. 302.035 of the statutes is created to read:
SB571,1,6 4302.035 Qualifications for wardens and superintendents. No person
5may serve as a warden or superintendent of a state prison unless he or she has a
6minimum of 3 years of experience as a correctional officer, as defined in s. 301.28 (1).
