2statutes; relating to: slaughter of equine animals.

This bill prohibits the slaughter of equine animals (horses and related animals)
for human consumption.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
SB262, s. 1 3Section 1. 97.42 (1) (a) of the statutes is amended to read:
SB262,1,54 97.42 (1) (a) "Animal" means cattle, sheep, swine, goats, and farm-raised deer,
5horses, mules, and other equines
.
SB262, s. 2 6Section 2. 97.42 (6) (c) of the statutes is amended to read:
SB262,1,97 97.42 (6) (c) No person shall slaughter horses, mules or other equines or may
8process equine carcasses or meat at establishments where other animals or poultry
9are slaughtered or
where other meat or poultry products are processed.

1Section 3. 97.425 of the statutes is created to read:
SB262,2,3 297.425 Slaughter of equine animals. (1) No person may slaughter an
3equine animal for human consumption.
SB262,2,5 4(2) No person may slaughter an equine animal at an establishment, as defined
5in s. 97.42 (1) (d).
