SJR38,1,1 1Relating to: declaring June Kids Safety Month.
SJR38,1,32 Whereas, research shows that nationally from 1987 to 2000 the unintentional
3injury death rate for children age 14 years and under has dropped by nearly 40%; and
SJR38,1,44 Whereas, in this region, the rate was closer to 30%; and
SJR38,1,75 Whereas, while this is one of the most dramatic declines ever seen in a
6children's health issue, unintentional injuries remain the number one killer of
7children age 14 years and under in the United States; and
SJR38,1,108 Whereas, children are at greater risk than adults of recreational injuries
9because they are unable to assess the risks involved and have less coordination,
10slower reaction times, and less accuracy; and
SJR38,1,1411 Whereas, children develop at different rates, both physically and
12psychologically, and a less developed child competing against a more mature child
13of the same age and weight is at a disadvantage and may be at greater risk for injury;

1Whereas, 40% of all unintentional injury-related deaths occur from May to
2August and the greatest summertime risks include drowning, bike crashes, falls,
3pedestrian incidents, and motor vehicle crashes, and July is the deadliest time for
4childhood unintentional injury with 12% of unintentional injury-related deaths
5occurring during this month alone; and
SJR38,2,76 Whereas, older children experience the greatest increase in unintentional
7injury-related death during the summer months; and
SJR38,2,108 Whereas, preventable injuries take an enormous financial, emotional, and
9social toll, not just on the injured children and their families but also on society as
10a whole; and
SJR38,2,1111 Whereas, these injuries are not inevitable, they are preventable; and
SJR38,2,1412 Whereas, children's safety is a concern every day no matter what time of the
13year, and all Wisconsin citizens are called on to renew the commitment to place a
14priority on child injury prevention; now, therefore, be it
SJR38,2,16 15Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
16Wisconsin legislature declare June Kids Safety Month.
