AJR22,1,1 1Relating to: proclaiming April 4, 2003, Sheboygan Day in Wisconsin.
AJR22,1,42 Whereas, the first European explorers to land on the shores of present-day
3Sheboygan were likely Jean Nicollet in the year 1635 and Louis Joliet and Father
4Jacques Marquette in the year 1643; and
AJR22,1,75 Whereas, at that time, there were a number of Indian tribes living in villages
6and camps in the Sheboygan and Sheboygan County area, including the Potawatomi,
7Chippewa, Ottawa, Winnebago, and Menominee tribes; and
AJR22,1,98 Whereas, it was not until 1814 that William Farnsworth came to these shores,
9returning in the year 1818 to establish a fur trading post; and
AJR22,1,1210 Whereas, the year 1882 brought to Sheboygan the arrival of William Pain and
11Colonel Oliver Crocker, who built a sawmill and 2 log cabins, actions which led to the
12subsequent arrival of others to the area; and
AJR22,1,1513 Whereas, the year 1836 proved to be an eventful year which saw the opening
14of Sheboygan's first hotel, the Sheboygan House, the creation of a post office in
15Sheboygan, and on December 7, 1836, the creation of Sheboygan County; and

1Whereas, in the year 1853 the city of Sheboygan was officially chartered, with
2H. Conklin being named the city's first mayor; and
AJR22,2,53 Whereas, built along its waterways, the natural beauty of the city of Sheboygan
4remains centered around the shores of Lake Michigan and the banks of the
5Sheboygan River; and
AJR22,2,86 Whereas, the people of Sheboygan are today, like their ancestors, hard-working
7people who center their lives around their family, their faith, and their community;
8and
AJR22,2,119 Whereas, on Friday, April 4, 2003, Sheboygan will celebrate the
10sesquicentennial anniversary of the official chartering of the city of Sheboygan; now,
11therefore, be it
AJR22,2,15 12Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
13Wisconsin legislature congratulate the city of Sheboygan on its upcoming 150th
14anniversary and proclaim April 4, 2003, Sheboygan Day in Wisconsin; and, be it
15further
AJR22,2,17 16Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall transmit a copy of this joint
17resolution to the mayor of Sheboygan.
