5Wisconsin-Madison chancellor; and

SJR39,1,86 Whereas, David Ward will have served the faculty, staff and students of the
7university, as well as the citizens of this state, as chancellor since June 1993, the
8longest tenure of any current leader of a Big 10 university; and

SJR39,1,109 Whereas, he has devoted nearly 40 years of service to the University of
10Wisconsin-Madison; and

SJR39,1,1311 Whereas, under David Ward's leadership, the university has substantially
12improved undergraduate education through improved advising, stronger core
13curriculum, and expanded research opportunities for students; and

1Whereas, he created and implemented the university's innovative
2interdisciplinary teaching and research initiative, known as the "cluster hiring
3program", which will bring 150 new faculty to the campus by 2003; and

5the state of Wisconsin and the university's alumni and donors for the campus' capital
6budgets, which have resulted in 57 construction projects on campus for research and
7instruction, including new buildings such as the Kohl Center, the Biotechnology
8Center, and the Pharmacy and Chemistry buildings; and

SJR39,2,129 Whereas, he created a similar partnership for the operating budget, the
10Madison Initiative, a $97,000,000 investment that will enable University of
11Wisconsin-Madison to continue to provide students an outstanding education and
12to help Wisconsin maintain its competitiveness in the global economy; and

SJR39,2,1513 Whereas, during his tenure, the university raised $740,000,000 in private
14funds, placing the University of Wisconsin-Madison number 1 in private support
15among public universities; and

SJR39,2,1816 Whereas, he created the Technology Transfer Council to help promote and steer
17the commercial potential of the University of Wisconsin-Madison research
18discoveries; and

SJR39,2,2119 Whereas, he shepherded the rapid growth of the nationally recognized
20University Research Park, which houses 68 companies that collectively employ more
21than 2,600 people; and

SJR39,2,2422 Whereas, he has reinvigorated the "Wisconsin Idea" by renewing the
23university's commitment to sharing the resources of the university with the state and
