1999 - 2000 LEGISLATURE
March 2, 2000 - Introduced by Representatives Grothman, Freese, Goetsch,
Kreuser, Musser, Owens, Spillner
and Sykora, cosponsored by Senator
Schultz. Referred to Committee on Rules.
AJR105,1,2 1Relating to: urging Congress to enact legislation requiring mandatory inspection
2of ratites under the federal Poultry Products Inspection Act.
AJR105,1,53 Whereas, currently, under the federal Poultry Products Inspection Act, poultry
4products from animals such as chickens and turkeys are required to be federally
5inspected in order to be sold in interstate commerce; and
AJR105,1,86 Whereas, under current federal law, ratites (ostriches, emus and rheas) are
7excluded from mandatory inspection, but a ratite producer may obtain voluntary
8inspection, the cost of which must be paid by the producer; and
AJR105,1,109 Whereas, the cost of voluntary inspection results in higher prices for ratite
10meat; and
AJR105,1,1111 Whereas, ratite meat is low in fat and high in protein; and
AJR105,1,1212 Whereas, most ratite producers are small, family-owned operations; and
AJR105,1,1513 Whereas, legislation has been introduced in Congress to cover ratites raised for
14human consumption under the Poultry Products Inspection Act, eliminating the
15costly inspection fees that other meat producers are not required to pay; and
AJR105,2,2
1Whereas, this legislation, H.R. 765 and S. 1133, is an important step in enabling
2the ratite industry to grow; and
AJR105,2,43 Whereas, the American Farm Bureau supports H.R. 765 and S. 1133 as leveling
4the playing field for the ratite industry; now, therefore, be it
AJR105,2,6 5Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
6Wisconsin legislature urge Congress to pass H.R. 765 and S. 1133; and, be it further
AJR105,2,8 7Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
8resolution to each member of this state's congressional delegation.
