2023 Assembly Resolution 7
ENGROSSED RESOLUTION
Relating to: commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.
Whereas, the Good Friday Agreement, reached on April 10, 1998, sought to end a decades-long period of politically-motivated violence in Northern Ireland, known as the Troubles, which took the lives of more than 3,500 people; and
Whereas, April 10, 2023, marks the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement, which, despite some outstanding issues, has been a considerable success; and
Whereas, many on the Emerald Isle owe their lives to the agreement, which has benefitted from the implementation and ongoing support from the governments of Ireland and the United Kingdom; and
Whereas, the agreement's success has been bolstered by the continuous bipartisan support of successive U.S. presidents, the U.S. Congress, state legislators, and other elected officials working in partnership with the governments of Ireland and the United Kingdom; and
Whereas, the Good Friday Agreement acknowledged the legitimacy of two differing political positions—support for Irish unity and support for Northern Ireland remaining part of the United Kingdom—and the ability of both groups to pursue their goals; and
Whereas, the Good Friday Agreement was a significant turning point, providing the Irish people with a political framework to address their future and a framework for lasting peace in Northern Ireland; and
Whereas, the Good Friday Agreement represented a democratic and peaceful means of resolving differences; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, That the members of the Wisconsin Assembly celebrate links between Americans and the Irish people; and, be it further
Resolved, That the members of the Wisconsin Assembly give thanks for continued peace and national cooperation upon the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.
