1An Act to amend 342.14 (3) of the statutes;
relating to: the certificate of title
2for a vehicle that is transferred to a spouse or domestic partner upon the death
3of the owner.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Under current law, the Department of Transportation issues a certificate of title
to a new owner of a vehicle after ownership of the vehicle is transferred. The new
owner pays a $62 fee for a certificate of title after a transfer and a $7.50 supplemental
title fee, except that a surviving spouse or domestic partner need not pay the
supplemental title fee if the vehicle is being transferred upon the death of his or her
spouse or domestic partner.
Under this substitute amendment, the fee for a certificate of title after a
transfer is waived when a vehicle is transferred upon a person's death to his or her
spouse or domestic partner.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:

, except that this fee shall be waived with respect to an application for transfer
3of a decedent's interest in a vehicle to his or her surviving spouse or domestic partner
4under ch. 770.

(1) This act first applies to an application for a certificate of title received by
7the department of transportation on the effective date of this subsection.
